Finding a good fit with your therapist is very important.

I believe effective therapy must occur in an environment of safety, trust, collaboration and a true connection between the therapist and the client. You deserve to feel understood, respected and supported. My work is to help you minimize the gap between where you are today and where you want to be.

As a highly engaged therapist, I believe in the restorative power of therapy.

We are all putting together the puzzle pieces of our lives without knowing what the final picture is going to look like.  I have sat with many people in profound moments of loss and heartache when unexpectedly meaning begins to emerge as they piece together the broken parts of their life.  That meaning is durable and even transformative.  There is a lasting strength that comes when we don’t hide or ignore the dark and shadowy pieces and recognize we not only need them but they are a integral part of the beauty of the whole picture.

I work from a strength based perspective to help you build on your personal resilience to feel more grounded, more fulfilled and to experience more joy in your life. And, I believe we grow when we feel safe and respected in our relationships. The first of which is with yourself.

While sadness, uncertainty, disappointment or grief are natural feelings. Feeling chronic anxiety, hopeless, inadequacy or paralyzed by fear are not. Together we can explore what might have led to these unrelenting feelings and work to better understand the hurt and gently heal. I believe that true healing only comes when we pay close attention to both our mind and our body.

I am trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and non-violent communication (NVC).  I am also informed by narrative therapy, positive psychology and spirituality in mental health.

Many of my clients have commented to me about my warmth and the general feeling of acceptance they feel in my office.  I have been described as straight forward, an active listener and a strong advocate.  Take some time to get to know me and my practice. When you feel ready send me an email or pick up the phone and give me a call. I look forward to getting to know YOU more.

Individual Support

When we start working together, you will learn new skills to use when you encounter stressful situations. When you become more aware of what drives your worry, sadness or uncertainty you will begin to learn your best way of approaching situations that would otherwise be uncomfortable for you. Sessions are 60 minutes.

Speaking Engagements

“Julie was OUTSTANDING! I could have listened to her all day. So much of what she says applies to everyone, not only cancer survivors. Everyone in the audience was relating to her words of wisdom. Not only was she so smart, she spoke effortlessly and with great compassion." - Stacey, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

How I got here…

I earned my masters degree after graduating from Columbia University in New York City. My professional career began at CancerCare, a national organization with supportive services for anyone impacted by a diagnosis of cancer. During my time at CancerCare I became very involved in the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) cancer “movement”. On a national level, I served on the Steering Committee of the Livestrong Young Adult Alliance a multi-discplinary group working to understand the unique issues impacting survivorship for individuals diagnosed with cancer between the ages of 15-39 years of age. Building on that knowledge, I developed CancerCare’s Young Adult Program responsive to life stage and distinct needs of this age group.

My work in AYA oncology introduced me to complexity of reproductive medicine. When I left CancerCare to start my private practice, I continued to see individuals impacted by cancer. And, because of the in depth knowledge of fertility, pregnancy loss and alternative approaches to family building, my client base of women and couples facing infertility began to steadily grow.

Today, I have a wide ranging practice. While the majority of my clients are still under the age of 40 years, I see individuals of all ages. And because my background is medically oriented many people do find me after receiving an unexpected medical diagnosis. Still, many people walk through my door struggling with workplace stress, relationships and generalized anxiety or depression and find my tangible and insight oriented approach is helpful as they work to care for themselves.

In 2016, after establishing a vibrant private practice in NYC, I moved out of Manhattan. At the time I made an intentional decision to continue my practice remotely. I work with my clients regularly over the phone and via video. And, because I recognize the value of face to face interactions, I regularly travel to NYC (every 10-12 weeks) to sit with my east coast clients in person. I have learned, right alongside those I work with, how connecting “right where they are” provides comfort, portability and convenience. Invaluable in allowing my clients get the support they need today. Since moving, my NYC based practice has doubled and I have established a face to face practice in the Midwest as well.
